Microform are stored as negatives in film reels and strips and viewed on a special machine in the library - you can request help from the library staff to view these collections dealing with East Asian history:

China through Western Eyes : manuscript records of traders, travellers, missionaries and diplomats, 1792-1942. Diaries, journals, letters, photographs and scrapbooks of a host of American and British businessmen, tourists, missionaries, journalists, and diplomats from the first mission China in 1792-1794 to the onset of World War II some 150 years later. Note that Hekman library owns only Parts 1-2, reels 1-30 and Parts 4-5 reels 48-88

Japan through Western Eyes : manuscript records of traders, travellers, missionaries and diplomats, 1853-1941 The William Elliot Griffis Collection from Rutgers University Library. Includes papers, publications, photographs and ephemera collected by Griffis, an employee of the Japanese government during the second half of the nineteenth century.

Church Missionary Society Archive: Section I, East Asia Missions. Part 17, Fukien Mission covering 1911-1929 Catalogue and original papers of Fukien Mission covering 1911-1929. Contains the Original Papers, which "are the incoming papers sent by the missions to London. They contain letters regarding all kinds of subjects, the current political situtation in China being covered in depth. There are letters from missionaries describing their first impressions, requesting furloughs, increases in salary, permission to marry, illness and retirement and there are vivid descriptions of their travels in the countryside and their work carried out in the missions. These are contained in the missionaries' letters, journals and annual reports."
