Welcome to Research for COMM 141

Start your research here for COMM 141 with tips and suggestions for specific library resources, suggested by your personal, subject librarian! This guide can help you find exactly what you need or get more ideas or help at any time.

Finding Research

For this project you'll be researching a public health or environmental issue/problem that has prompted a persuasive (PSA) campaign..

You're required to find at least four sources (other than the campaign website) on the issue and/or the related persuasive campaign.  These sources must be credible, reliable, and recent, and at least one of them should be from an academic, peer-reviewed journal.

Once you've chosen your issue and/or campaign, you need to:

  • Research about the issue/problem - the causes and effects, who is most impacted, extent and scope, etc.
  • Research how this issue/problem has been addressed through persuasive communication campaigns.  This includes your chosen campaign, of course, but also other persuasive campaigns that address the same issue or may be similar.

Hekman Library Basics

Need an orientation (or reorientation) to using Hekman Library?  Check out this "Get Connected" guide or browse our YouTube channel with quick videos on library basics.

Note that if you're off-campus, one of the most important tips for using Hekman Library is to start at the library homepage.  This is how and where you will be identified as a Calvin community member so that you have access to our subscription-based resources.  (You'll be prompted for a login when needed; enter your Calvin username and passphrase.)
